harry reid of where we've been on the negotiations and the lack thereof. spinning going on in washington and not the kind done on an exercise bicycle. eamon. >> not the senate's job to be concise, let alone the senate majority leader. never been known for that. that's not going to change, but what harry reid is saying it's their fault. we already heard from mitch mcconnell, the republican leader, it's their fault, it's the democrats. finger-pointing in washing, ton, but what i heard from speaker bain e. he said we's expecting a new proposal by the president. swu the communication is off on the capitol hill switchboard but mcconnell sounds an awful like a guy that the president will make him a new proposal based on what he and the president discuss the laughed night. the real condition here is will president obama make a new deal for any deal that could be gotten done. >> i just tweeted that out, you nailed, it eamon. lots of finger-pointing an complaining and sour grapes going on and very little in the way of compromise talk. thanks very much. continue to monitor the situation

. >> we learned this from sources earlier. the senate majority leader, harry reid went to the senate floor and talked about the snag. list ton what he said. >> the one thing i do want to mention is that we're not going to have any social security cuts at this stage, that doesn't seem appropriate. we're open to just discussion about entitlement reforms, but we're going to have to take it in a different direction, the present status will not work. we're willing to make concessions as part of a balanced comprehensive agreement. but will not agree to cut social security. with 36 hours left until the country goes over the cliff, i remain hopeful, but realistic about the prospect of reaching a bipartisan agreement. at some point in the negotiating progress, it becomes obvious when the other side is intentionally demanding concessions they know the other side is not willing to make. we are not there, mr. president. >> right now, talks are at a standstill, they haven't been going on all day. but as we speak, you're looking at the senate floor, it's pretty empty, republicans and democrats are

senator mcconnell and harry reid can reach a deal in the next couple of hours, leading senate republican notes there is no guarantee it will pass both the house and the senate. >> if mcconnell can't get 60% of us to vote for this deal, it will be hard for boehner to get it through the house. i want to vote for it even though i won't like it because the country has a lot at stake. >> among the republican krengs any revenue generated by a potential deal, they would like to see it come do paying down the deficit, not new government spending. shannon? >> how confident are the "cook's essentialsal" democrats about the ability to get this done? >> reporter: congressional democrats do not sound over confident. they recognize this is a heavy lift between the top two senators in the next couple of hours. but a leading new york democrat sounded cautiously optimistic. >> there is certainly no breakthroughs yet between senator mcconnell and senator reid. but there is a real possibility of a deal. i have been a legislator for 37 years. and i have watched how these things work. they almost

harry reid are you going pass a budget. i really do believe that the president and the democrats really have intention and as a result have no plan to limit the rate of growth in government and no plan to save social security and medicare and we need to start putting political pressure on them to show the american people a plan. the house passed two budgets since i have been here. they both include some proposal to save medicare. the democrats have not done that and this is really where we start turning the messaging on them and start demanding. i think the american people have a right to know, president obama are you going so solve the 92% or 93% of the deficit. what is it that you talked about on the campaign trail? >> sean: how can you help me he out or help the american people out. they don't know what taxes will be in a couple of days and now we are counting the hours. how is it possible the u.s. senate does not pass a spending bill which constitutionally they are supposed to pass in over three years, over 13 hyundais and then elect the house republicans that did their job?
